THERE were 91 starters in a single stableford at the Griffith Golf Club last Saturday with a CCR of 69 with the day acting as a qualifier for the Club Challenge with players to be announced later.
Tony Catanzariti and Wayne Cook both carded 40 points in A grade with Catanzariti taking the win on a countback, carding 22 points home to Cook's 19.
Catanzariti fired 77 off the stick, canning a birdie on the 12th but Cook birdied the first, sixth and ninth in a par 36 out with a one pointer on the 18th costing him a win to come home in two over par 37.
Mathew Butcher carded 42 points to be best in B grade, scoring 20 points out and 22 home, firing 79 off the stick and should have played himself into the top grade.
Runner-up, Jack Draskovic, canned four-point birdies on the first and eighth but only managed 11 points on the other seven holes in scoring 19 points out.
He played with more consistency on the back nine, scoring 21 points home with a four-point par on the 12th.
Benny Cappello was at his garrulous best after carding 42 points to easily win C grade.
Capello played above himself on the front nine, carding a four pointer on the second to score 23 points out; he then added another four pointer on the 12th, in scoring 19 home.
Runner-up Steven Richards had problems on the front nine, only scoring 17 points out but found his rhythm on the run home, draining a birdie on the 17th in carding 21 points on the back nine.
Pro Pins to Alf Franchi and Jeff Mullins and Geoff Pellizzer the par three 11th.
Vouchers went to 37 points.
MALE members are advised
that renovations to their toilet area have commenced, but it will take no more than three weeks. In the meantime, a temporary toilet will be situated beside the shed near the clubhouse.
When the men’s toilet renovation is completed, the ladies one will commence and the ladies will use the men’s toilet until theirs is completed with the men continuing to use the temporary facility.
Members are also reminded that if they put $10 or more credit on their golf link card, they can save 20 cents on a glass of beer, wine or spirits, or 50 cents on a stubbie and a dollar on a six pack or carton.
THE WRDGA Championships will be played at Finley this coming weekend with both men’s and ladies’ foursomes and mixed foursomes on Saturday and the stroke championships on Sunday.
THE event at home on Saturday is a single stableford with another on Sunday and the event last Sunday was a single stableford with 47 players and a CCR of 70.
Laurie Corner carded 41 points for a win in A grade ahead of Brian Savage, runner-up 39 points.
The course tested the B grade players, with Brett Crooks taking the win on 37 points just one ahead of runner-up Paul Smith 36 points.
Stephen Whitfield carded the day’s best score of 43 points to street his C grade rivals, six points ahead of John Wallace 37 points.
Vouchers went to 35 points on a countback.
LAST Thursday’s vets competition attracted a field of 48 players in a two grade single stableford with a CCR of 69.
Allan King produced his best effort for some time, taking out 0-19 division with a handicap breaker of 44 points.
Silvio Bortolin 40 points was runner-up, with Gerry Cox 38 points third on a countback.
Merv Hill won 20-36 division also with a handicap slasher of 43 points ahead of an unlucky
runner-up John Evans 42 points and Dino Battocchio third 40 points on a countback.
Vouchers went to 36 points on a countback.
Tomorrow’s event is again a single stableford but in three grades.
A NOVELTY event – a best three scores of four stableford – was played last Wednesday with 45 players.
Graham Sibraa, David Woodside, Brian Savage and Peter DenHouting were able to average 7.5 points per hole to win, carding 135 points.
Runners-up John Gale, Charlie Jones, Mal Ledwidge and Don Hay were not far behind, averaging just over seven points per hole to finish on 129 points.
Only two teams of four won vouchers to 122 points.
