Push for farmers to go organic

28/05/2008 11:14:00 AM
It is because of this that local organic farmers will be holding an information morning in Griffith tomorrow.

Held at the Ulong Street cafe O’Donnell’s, the event will showcase organic food grown in and around Griffith. Café owner Martin O’Donnell said most locals remain unaware of how much organic produce is farmed in the area.

“Organic growers can talk to interested farmers, as well as consumers curious about organic food,” he said.

“We wanted to provide more information to the community

about organic food.”

Mr O’Donnell said his cafe sets out to include locally grown organic produce in their dishes whenever it can.

“We use organic pumpkin, snow peas, zucchini, tomatoes and capsicums,” he said.

“I grow my own oranges, which we use to make our orange juice.”

Mr O’Donnell said while organic food may not look as good as conventionally farmed produce, it is more likely to taste better.

“Supermarkets have made us think that it is more important that a piece of fruit looks perfect than tastes good,” he said.

“But it doesn’t matter that an orange has blemished skin, because you don’t eat the skin.”

There are an estimated 15 organic farmers in the Griffith area, producing fruit, vegetables and rice as well as sheep, beef and pork.
