IN A bid to tackle binge drinking among local teens the Griffith Community Drug Action Team (CDAT) has launched some handy tools.
Just in time for the end of year celebrations, the group launched the NSW Health resources and an interactive youth website.
It took place on Wednesday, November 19 at Griffith Neighbourhood House.
Aimed at raising the awareness of young people and their parents about the risks of binge drinking, CDAT chairwoman Pat Cox said the guides provide quality and accessible information.
“At this time of the year with school leavers celebrating I think it’s very timely.
“And I think the interactive website is particularly good because we recognise that young people do spend time on the internet and it’s also relevant to parents.”
She said the need for
education about responsible drinking has been supported by figures showing that 140 young people are taken to public hospital emergency departments every month
as a result of alcohol consumption.
The new website www.what RUdoing2URself.com expands on the key messages of the guides for teenagers, as well as offering an interactive educational environment.
“Many young people are drinking at risky levels and these new resources aim to educate them about the risks associated with binge drinking and provide tips for having an enjoyable and safe night out,” Mrs Cox said.
“Parents can influence their teenagers’ drinking behaviour and the parents’ resource gives guidance for encouraging communication, setting boundaries and modelling low risk drinking.”
The Guides are available through Griffith CDAT by contacting Pat Cox and will also be available through the library, community health centre, schools and
PCYC.
