Inspiration in many guises

ONE was inspired by mathematics, the other retail therapy.

Despite their obvious differences, the pieces created by Marian Catholic College students Jacob De Paoli and Jeanette Codognotto have one thing in common.

Both have been nominated for inclusion in DesignTECH, the annual exhibition of outstanding major design projects developed by Higher School Certificate design and technology students.

Jacob’s stunning wooden creation was made using blocks of radiator pine, red gum and toughened glass.

“The actual concept is based on a cosine curve you’d find in maths,” he said.

“I’m pretty happy with how it all turned out. It was a challenge to figure out and put all of the individual pieces together using hundreds of blocks.”

For Jeanette it was a desire to make use of the bags she brought home from shopping that formed the materials

for her colourful two-piece outfit.

“You get so many of them piling up. I looked at them and thought. I really need to find something useful to do with all these bags,” she said.

“The design was probably the hardest because there were so many different ways I could have put them together.”

The DesignTECH exhibition will open at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum on December 20 and remain open until March 18, 2009.

A selection of the projects will then tour NSW regional centres throughout NSW from mid-March to August.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
