Domenic Sergi is a hero.

From nine regional finalists the humble 87-year-old has been named the winner of the 2008 IGA Community Chest Unsung Heroes Award with close to 4,000 public votes received.

He was nominated for the prestigious inaugural award by his daughter Santa Portolesi.

For his efforts, Griffith Can Assist will now be awarded $5000 in appreciation of his hard work and dedication.

Vanessa Gugliemino from Griffith Can Assist said she was thrilled with the result.

“He is such a selfless individual and it is great that his efforts have been recognised,” she said.

“We are extremely grateful that he has nominated us to receive the donation. Mr Sergi is such a kind-hearted person. This is a great result for our group, but also a wonderful way to recognise such a worthy winner.”

Mr Sergi, who spends much of his days going to various fruit and vegetable packing sheds and farms in order to load up his car boot and deliver the goods to charity homes and the needy, said he was verypleased.

“I am so happy to have been chosen. I would like to express my thanks to IGA for sponsoring this initiative,” Mr Sergi said.

“I would also like to thank all of the supporters of the awards and all those who went online to vote, I am over the moon. I am looking forward to handing over the cheque to Griffith Can Assist.”

Mr Sergi was named Griffith’s citizen of the year in 1997 and is a life member of the Yoogali Club. He also sponsors 11 children in Africa.
