$25,000 in help for community

A SHADE sail to protect preschoolers from the sun, a program to help lift the self-esteem of Aboriginal youth and the promise of melodic Christmas carols echoing across Griffith.

These are just some of the projects set to go ahead after receiving a financial boost.

Griffith mayor Mike Neville has presented 20 cheques, totalling more than $25,000, to community groups.

Cr Neville said it was always a pleasure to provide financial assistance to local organisations striving to initiate new and exciting projects or further develop existing programs.

“These funds are to recognise what these groups are already doing and also an opportunity to give some cash back for the hard work they do. They make a difference in the community and council does value what is being done,” he said.

“It is hoped that the financial assistance will enable many worthwhile projects to be undertaken, benefitting the community of Griffith.”

Among the groups to receive cheques were Griffith Shed for Men, which received $1500; Griffith Aboriginal Medical Service, $1000; Griffith Aged Care Services, $1500; Griffith Neighbourhood House, $2434, Carols by Candlelight Committee, $1500; Yenda Preschool, $1500, and Griffith Aged Care Services, $1500.

Cherie Adams picked up cheques on behalf of Griffith Neighbourhood House and Carer Assist and thanked council for the generous contribution.

“Neighbourhood House was broken into recently and we had a computer stolen. We will now be able to buy a laptop to replace that,” she said.

“The rest will be used for mental health resources for carers such as DVDs and books they can borrow.”

Other successful organisations were: Griffith Suicide Prevention & Support Group, $1300; Southern Riverina Youth Support Services, $1000; Griffith Child Care Centre, $1500; Youth Advisory Board, $1,000; Griffith Can Assist, $1500; MIA MS Branch of Multiple Sclerosis, $1500; Diwali Festival Committee, $1,500, Annalisa Surian $1000; GRAPA, $1500; Griffith Lifeball Association, $700; Griffith Amateur Swimming Club, $1320; Lake Wyangan P & C Association, $1000, and Association of Calabrian Women, $1000.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
